Skype Me

June 28th, 2008

I started skype’ing again and I’m looking for folks to video skype with. If you have a webcam and want to skype, let us know. Tru loves it! I’ve also had a good time getting to see the where several out of town friends live that I otherwise haven’t been able to see. Since it works on wireless laptops, I’ve been able to roam all over the house while video chatting. I just have to make sure I watch out and make sure I don’t accidentally catch Erin feeding Heidi :-)

I know that a few family members have Mac’s. I think they have built in cameras. If you don’t have a camera, I have had really good luck with the Logitech Communicate STX which is only $37 with free shipping from newegg. It comes with a built in microphone. It also works great in Linux with a V4L and V4L2 driver.

IM or email me and I’ll give you my skype info.

Donate Your Computer to Science!

Help cure cancer and other terminal illnesses by allowing Stanford University to use your computer when you aren’t using it!

According to Stanford.edu, “What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology’s workhorses — its “nanomachines.” Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or “fold.” The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery. Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. ‘misfold’), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.”

They have develped a computer program that runs on your computer. When you’re not using your computer, the program downloads proteins, studies them, and sends the results back to Stanford. Here’s how to do it:

Windows users, download this! Still stuck with Windows 98 or ME? use this one instead! Linux users, use this program.

Download it to your desktop, or another location where you won’t forget to run it everyday! Run it. Enter 12912 as your team number and linuxChique as your username (if you don’t want to create a new one). Then agree to everything else it asks you. Let it do it’s thing! You’ll be working toward a cure for cancer and other genetic terminal illnesses!

To make this program start automatically when you boot windows, go to Start menu -> [all] Programs -> Startup submenu. Then just make a shortcut from the Folding@Home****.exe file into that menu.

Linux users, just add it to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local!

The longer the program runs, the more good you are doing! You can let it go for days at a time. This program runs on my computer constantly, and I’ve completedly 2 work units already. Thank you for listening, and please let me know if you actually do this!

Here’s my progress so far:

Quick, get a camera!

April 26th, 2007

Sorry for the blog spam, but you all need to run out and get one of these video cameras quick! Anytime you see a “square” 4×3 video on our website it was probably shot with this video camera. For a few more days you can get one for $69. Target sells them normally for $129. They are on sale on the Target website only for $89. There is also a $20 mail in rebate on top of that. Thats $60 less than the normal price.

$89 at Target.com

$20 mail-in rebate

Everyone, please get one. Erin and I will help you share the vids from it online. Its super easy to use and transfer to the computer. No software, no tapes, no mess. It records everything digitally and has a built in USB plug that you just plug directly into your comptuer. You don’t even need a cable! You can already judge the quality of the video yourself since many of the videos you’ve seen from us were from this camera.

new format for videos

January 21st, 2007

In case you didn’t notice, we switched to using “flash” as the format for our videos. This is the same as YouTube and Google Video. Hopefully our videos will now be viewable by everyone. Please post comments to let us know wether it worked or not.

You will need the flash player to view them. Almost everyone has it installed already do you probably don’t have to do anything. If you don’t have it, you should be able to just click on where the video would be and it will install it quickly and easily.

Calling all WCHS Alumni!

June 1st, 2006

I was looking for a website that the Class of 2000 grads were using to keep up with each other, and found that the only one anyone is using is Classmates.com, which costs money. I find that ridiculous, so I made my own! This is not only for 2000 grads, but anyone who graduated from WCHS since it first opened its doors! Just go to WayneCountyHighAlumni.com and add yourself. There are simple instructions on the first page, and I’m going to add a forum/bulletin board soon! Send this to everybody you know who went to WCHS. I’m really looking forward to getting back in touch with everyone!
